Nuke Dump in Cumbria?
(a letter from a campaigner:)
Dear All,
There is an issue which should be brought to the attention of groups and businesses in the County who are promoting the ethos of buying local and supporting the Cumbrian economy. Over the past decade our area has developed a quality trading brand which depends upon thriving UK sales .
Currently the reputable Cumbrian image and economy is under threat from the adverse publicity generated by the West Cumbria Managing Radioactive Waste Safely consultation.
The proposal to bury the nations stockpile of high level nuclear waste beneath West Cumbria has led to substantial national media coverage and coverage with headlines similar to this in the Mirror newspaper -"Nuke' graveyard' plan: Tons of deadly waste could be dumped below the Lake District".
The reputation of food from our farmers and producers alongside Cumbria 's multi million tourism industry is being put at risk for the possibility of a few hundred jobs and financial incentives for the local host community. The decision to ascertain the suitability of West Cumbria as a site could take over a decade and undermine Cumbria's credibility as an area that values its quality produce and environment.
The Nirex enquiry in 1996 established that the geology of West Cumbria is unsuitable for deep disposal of nuclear waste. Several eminent geologists have voiced their concerns about the current proposal. IF geological deep disposal is the way to deal with high level nuclear waste then it should be undertaken in an area that is geologically suitable , does not have a quality brand to undermine or host one of the most popular international tourism destinations in the UK .
Unfortunately consultation and information has been concentrated in West Cumbria with little consideration given the impact on the County wide economy. To redress this a list is being made of businesses who wish to register their objection to Cumbria, Allerdale and Copeland Councils continuing the discussion to host the national stockpile of high level nuclear waste. If you know of a business who will be impacted could you please forward this e mail. If you are a business who would like to be included please e mail dianne@creative-extiles.co.uk with your business name.
If you wish to register your opposition to proceeding to the next stage in this development please contact your local County Councillor [and Borough Councillor if in Allerdale or Copeland] .
