Waste Action Group

Aims

The waste group is currently not active. In the past, we have worked with local businesses and residents to reduce waste in Brampton and improve facilities for reusing and recycling it once it has been produced.

Recent/On-going projects

Plastic bag campaign
In 2008 we lobbied the Brampton chamber of Trade and together we ran a successful campaign to limit – and hopefully eventually eliminate the use of plastic carrier bags in Brampton. An audio-visual presentation was also given about the destructive nature of plastic to the networking conference. Since then many shops have reported a marked reduction in the provision of these bags, although we recognise that there will be a requirement to keep the message alive.

Recycling
More recently we turned our attention to the promotion of local recycling facilities. We are working with Shanks waste, the contractors responsible for operating the Household Waste Recycling Centre on the Townfoot estate, to boost usage of this facility and avoid unnecessary carriage of this waste to Carlisle. We have also looked into facilities for the disposal of household batteries (ABW in Gelt road as well as at the HWRC)

One of our group, having returned to the UK and been shocked by the lack of recycling facilities, has established a Facebook page where members can share ideas and experiences about domestic recycling.

We have also been involved with an initiative from Impact housing group to promote all forms of plastic recycling through education about what recycled plastic is actually used for.

A possible future project would be to link with Food Action Group in the promotion of facilities to recycle commercial food waste.

If you would like to continue any of this work, please contact us and we will try to help where we can.
